Tutorial
-
Launch Carrara and select File|New.
-
Build a creature or simple mesh, set up the bones, and attach the skeleton.
Since this isn't a tutorial about creature modeling or bones, feel free to
grab a prefab creature, pictured in Figure 1, for the
PC or Mac.
-
It's not a requirement, but it does make your life easier if you animate the
creature before applying Anything Grows. Again because this is not a
tutorial on animating, the prefab creature is already animated.
-
Select Insert|Anything Grows and when the Anything Grows UI comes up, change
the following settings
Base Object = Glider
Show Strands = Unchecked
Bones Mode = Checked
Bones Mode tells Anything Grows that this object is an bones animated object and use the bone free version of the mesh for distributing strands.
-
Flip back to the Assemble room and make sure that the Anything Grows object
has the same Center and Hot Point as the creature.
-
Move the timeline to the end of the animation, flip to the Model room and
set Anything Grows Animate slider to 100%.
-
Move the timeline back to the beginning, and change the following Anything
Grows settings
Show Strands = Checked
Show Base = Unchecked
Length Shader = Fur Length
Gravity Direction Z = -50%
Gravity Direction X = -100%
Length = 0.75 in
Length Shader = Fur Length
Width = 0.03 in
Start Bend Effects at Segment = 0
-
Finally, set the number of strands, sides, wiggle, and segments as desired and
memory allows. Shade to suit and render. The Anything Grows fur will follow
the boned creature as it's animated in the scene. Click on Figure
2 to see the final QuickTime animation.

Final note, a tip of the hat to litst for his "Lots
of Shaders!" product. They provided a great starting point for the
creature's textures.
